BHBR Country Week 2023 Fours at Central Wendouree Bowling Club
BHBR Country Week 2023 Men’s and Women’s Fours events were held on Thursday, 9th February 2023 at Central Wendouree Bowling Club.
A total of 11 men’s teams (3 sections of 4 teams) and 3 women’s teams (1 section of 3 teams) competed on the day with fine weather prevailing once again for bowlers.
In the Men’s Fours, Timothy Griffin, Mark Powell, Gregory Ross and Ross Powell (Learmonth), John Matusik, Barry Yates, Alan Penrice and Stephen Hepworth (Creswick), Gary Moy, Ron Verlin, Adam McCormack and David Kelly (Learmonth) all won their sections, while Graeme Perry, Bernie Charleson, Jim Taylor and Ron Leishman (Smeaton) advanced to the semi finals courtesy of being best performed next team.
Men’s Fours Semi Finals finals are scheduled for play at 9.30am Friday, 10th February 2023, with the Final approximately 11.30am.
There were only three entries in the Women’s Fours, and they were from Bungaree, Invermay and Learmonth.
This meant the Women’s Fours winner was decided by sectional play over 3 rounds with the team scoring the most points being declared winner.
Each team played each other once and Learmonth and Bungaree did battle in Round 1.
Learmonth’s Pat Hunter, Shirley Marshall, Sandy Redpath and Judy Verlin proved too strong defeating Bungaree’s Emily McDonald, Lorraine Reed, Fay Toohey and Marita Toohey 13-6 in an entertaining match.
In Round 2, Bungaree came up against Invermay’s Yvonne McDonald, Gwen Molloy, Heather Brennan and Jennifer Blower and they finished 8-8 in an exciting contest.
Round 3 was make or break for both Learmonth and Invermay, and following a close tussle between two competitive teams, it was the Learmonth ladies, Pat Hunter, Shirley Marshall, Sandy Redpath and Judy Verlin crowned champions with a 13-11 win over the Invermay team.
As the Women’s Fours event was decided by section play today, there is no Women’s Fours event on Friday.
