Ocean Grove wins Champion of State Pennant 2024 – Midweek crown at Moama

Ocean Grove beat Bendigo by an impressive 19 shots to capture the Champion of State Pennant 2024 – Weekend title on Tuesday, 7th May 2024 at Moama Bowling Club.

The Ocean Grove side won all three rinks against Bendigo in the Final with Tyson Cromie’s rink scoring a decisive 19-8 win over Luke Hoskin’s rink.

A 17-13 win by Jenny Keep’s rink over Lee Harris’ rink and Matt Flapper’s 12-8 victory over Gary Downie’s rink made it a one-act affair for the Geelong Region side.

Final score was 48-29 and Ocean Grove’s only loss was to the Ballarat Highlands Bowls Region representative, Gisborne in the final round of sectional play.

BHBR’s Gisborne had a mixed tournament winning 2 matches and losing 3 to finish fifth on the Section 2 table behind Ocean Grove.

They finished equal on points with Wangaratta but with inferior shots against.

The Gisborne side went down 33-38 to Cohuna in their first match before routing Stawell 52-33 in the second round.

Losses to Wangaratta (28-49) and Frankston (31-39) in the next two rounds put paid to their chances, but they finished with aplomb defeating eventual champions Ocean Grove 39-38 in the final round.
