Buninyong and Clunes teams win Pairs at Country Week 2024

Country Week 2024 kicked off on Monday, 5th February 2024 at Central Wendouree Bowling Club with 24 teams contesting the Men’s Pairs competition and 8 teams in the Women’s Pairs event.

Representing teams included Ballan, Beaufort, Bungaree, Buninyong, Clunes, Creswick, Diggers Rest, Invermay, Learmonth, Linton, Smeaton & Waubra.

Central Wendouree’s Len Vincent coordinated the event with his merry band of helpers, while Ballarat Trailers & Towbars sponsored Country Week 2024.

Three games of 2x2x2x2 pairs (9 ends) were played in both the men and women’s sections and it took multiple countbacks to find the men’s winner.

Buninyong’s Allan Donelly & Peter Aldred and Learmonth’s Ross Powell & Greg Ross both managed 3 wins and 46 points to tie for first, while Buninyong’s Wayne Morgan and Brian Wilcock were close behind in third place on 3 wins and 45 points.

A countback resulted in Alan and Peter +33 shots and Ross and Greg +33 shots, so it went down to least number of shots conceded to determine the victor.

The Buninyong duo conceded 15 shots while their Learmonth counterparts conceded 20 shots, making Allan Donelly and Peter Aldred from the Buninyong Bowling Club the Country Week 2024 Men’s Pairs champions.

Buninyong’s Allan Donnely was excited to win the pairs event with his clubmate and enjoyed the day.

We had a good day and it’s great to win a country week pairs event with Peter, ” Allan said.

The day itself was good fun with good company and had a great country feel about it.”

Peter Aldred echoed Allan’s feelings about the day.

Country Week is always a good event,” Peter said.

It’s always highly competitive as the results and countback showed, and its always got that country feel to it.”

Grabbing the win with Allan makes it even more enjoyable.”

In the Women’s Pairs event, Clunes duo Jenny Cameron and Debbie Annear were outright winners with 3 wins and 51 points.

Runners-up were Bungaree’s Fay Toohey and Tammy Ballard on 2 wins and 37 points.

Central Wendouree’s Len Vincent, was pleased with the turn out and how the day panned out.

We made a couple of changes this year with just the three days of play on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and no finals on Friday.”

Each event is completed on the same day and the response has been positive.”

We’re thankful to all the clubs who entered and it’s great to get a team from Diggers Rest and hopefully next year we can attract more Highlands teams to make it even more competitive.”

Ballarat Trailers & Towbars sponsored the event and we’re very thankful to them.”

Country Week 2024 continues the Triples on Wednesday, 7th February 2024 and Fours the following day (Thursday, 8th February) at the same venue.
