BHBR Super Dome Series 2023 – Round 6 Results
The final round of BHBR Super Dome Series 2023 was played on Wednesday, 13th September 2023 at Sebastopol Bowling Club with Webbcona claiming the region title in a last bowl thriller.
Three matches were played on the night including two semi finals and the grand final.
Semi Final 1
The Elizabeth Kierce led City Oval Brown faced Buninyong Gold in the first semi final with the match going to a tiebreaker.
City Oval Brown won the deciding set to win 3-2 and advance to the grand final.
Semi Final 2
Webbcona played City Oval Gold in semi final 2, a battle between two teams undefeated in sectional play.
Tied at one set all, once again a tiebreaker was required to find a winner.
After a fascinating final end, it was Webbcona through to the grand final following a 3-2 victory.
Grand Final
The grand final between City Oval Brown and Webccona was an exciting affair that came down to the very last bowl of the night.
The first set ebbed and flowed Webbcona’s way.
They led 3-1 after 4 ends when City Oval Brown opted for the powerplay.
A 4 shot powerplay win next end resulted in an 8 shot gain to City Oval Brown, giving them a 9-3 lead with one end to play.
Not to be outdone, Webbcona had their powerplay to use in the last end, needing 7 shots to win.
Webbcona held 3 shots in the head as skip Ben McArthur stepped up to bowl.
Fresh off his top performance skipping in the previous weekend’s VBL2, Ben’s last bowl turned 3 shots into 4 to gain double points of 8 and an inspiring 11-9 first set victory.
Webbcona got off to a great start in Set 2, leading 4-3 after 4 ends, before City Oval Brown rattled off 6 and 4 shots in the next two ends to win the set 13-4 and take the match to yet another tiebreaker.
City Oval Brown were all over the jack in the tiebreaker until Webbcona’s third Matthew Blackburn put the jack in the ditch with a perfectly executed weighted shot.
With 4 bowls remaining, City Oval Brown’s Liz Keirce produced two cracking bowls within mat length of the ditch while Ben McArthur’s first bowl landed in the ditch.
Down shot with one bowl to play, Webbcona’s Ben Mcarthur stepped on to the mat with the game on the line.
Ben channelled his inner ‘Burras’ to produce the bowl of the night, a majestic draw that willed its way to shot for his team, and victory in the process.
A fitting end to a great match played in wonderful spirit.
