Sebastopol’s Greg Brown reaches Semi Finals of 2023 Australian Indoor Championships at Club Tweed

Sebastopol’s Greg Brown had an outstanding 2023 Australian Indoor Championships at Club Tweed this week, advancing through to the semi final stages of the event.

Greg faced Dunkeld’s Darren Gordon in the semi final and bowed out of the event on a third set tiebreaker.

The semi final was a hard fought clash with neither player wilting in the heat of battle.

Darren got off to a great start in the first set leading 5-1 after 4 ends before Greg got the upper hand courtesy of some fine draw bowling to lead 7-6 after 8 ends.

Two shots to Darren on the 9th end clinched the set for him at 8-7 and there was little between the two during the first stanza, with Greg winning 5 of the nine ends but down on the scoreboard.

Set 2 belonged to Greg after he jumped out of the blocks leading 6-2 after 4 ends, and although Darren added 3 more shots, it ended in a comfortable 10-5 victory to the Sebastopol bowler.

A 3rd set tiebreaker over 3 ends was required to determine the winner.

Greg won the first end by one shot before his opponent snared 2 shots on the 2nd end, with Greg down 1-2 going into the 3rd and deciding end.

The final end came down to Greg’s last bowl where he was 3 shots down at the head but had 3 bowls behind the jack in well placed positions.

He opted to play with weight with his final bowl and was unable to change the head, dropping three in the process to go down 5-1 in the tiebreaker and bowing out of the tournament.

It was fantastic effort by Greg Brown to reach the semi finals of such a prestigious event and a fillet for the Ballarat Highlands Bowls Region.

He also defeated highly rated Jesse Noronha (Cabramatta) on the way to the semis.

Leah McArthur (Webbcona) contested the women’s division of the 2023 Australian Indoor Championships and landed South Australia’s number one ranked player Laini McGorman in the first round.

It was a tough assignment for Leah, but the Ballarat Highlands bowler proved a tough nut to crack before going down 11-7, 8-3 in a top effort against a quality opponent.
