City Oval captures 2022-2023 BHBR Open Fours Men’s and Women’s Double

City Oval Bowling Club have scored the double in their Centennial year with both their Men’s and Women’s team entries capturing the 2022-2023 BHBR Open Fours Event on Sunday 6th November 2022 at BMS Bowling Club.

The Wayne Roberts entry of Heath Fumberger (lead), Wayne Roberts (second), Ben Morris (third) and Gavin Mann (skip) played Victoria’s rink skippered by Haig Varcoe in the Final.

The City Oval side took the early ascendancy moving out to a 12 to 6 lead midway through the game, before Haig’s rink took stock in the second half of the match, clawing to within 3 shots in a tight tussle.

On the last end, Gavin Mann and his team steadied to win the end by one shot and thereby secure the title.

In the morning Semi Finals, City Oval’s Wayne Roberts rink played off against Ray Wilson’s team from Linton and had a 7 shot win, whilst Victoria’s Haig Varcoe rink competed against Webbcona’s Zac Stewart rink, winning through with a 6 shot victory.

22/23 BHBR Women’s Fours Finals

Janine Roberts led her City Oval team mates to the 2022-2023 BHBR Women’s Fours Championship with the team consisting of Sandra Grano (lead), Sally McCracken (second), Elizabeth Kierce (third) and Janine Roberts (skip).

In their morning Semi Final against Jenny Sheppard’s rink from Webbcona, the team was challenged by a blustery wind and some cloud cover before winning through with a six shot win to advance to Final in the afternoon.

Their opposition was the Clunes rink of Eileen Spong who managed a 2 shot victory in the morning against Anne Draffen’s rink from Ballan.

Weather conditions were ideal in the Grand Final where the Janine Roberts team jumped out of the gates winning the first four ends, including scoring a 6 on the fourth end, which set the team up for their final 15 shot victory, winning 23 shots to 15.
